NEW PALTZ – There is a
“probable case” of mumps at New Paltz High School. The Ulster
County Health Department has notified SUNY New Paltz, which has had several
cases in recent weeks that a high school student had been in “close
contact” with a SUNY New Paltz student, who was previously diagnosed
with mumps and was fully immunized.
The high school student has also been in close contact with a New Paltz Middle School student and a Duzine student leading school officials to notify students, staff and parents at all four schools in the district that they may be at risk of exposure to mumps.
As of November 23, the SUNY New Paltz Student Health Service has confirmed 24 cases of mumps on campus, including one athletics staff member and several members of the swim team.
The state Health Department has indicated that there is minimal risk
of transmission. Mumps is transmitted by close contact, sharing of utensils,
drinking glasses, and saliva contact as in kissing. Washing hands is recommended
as a precaution by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
