MIDDLETOWN – When there are performances held at the Paramount Theater in Middletown, there is a shortage of parking in the city’s downtown area.  That is one reason why the city is considering construction of a parking deck nearby.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano said such a facility would also provide parking to aid in redeveloping other facilities in the immediate area.
“It would help redevelop primarily the Classy Leather building on Canal Street because that building has no parking at all,” DeStefano said. “And with our acquisition of the federal court building they would have a possible easement through our property to their residents, whether it is a dormitory or upper floor apartments and first floor commercial, they would have access to parking through a well-lit area.”
A parking deck near the Paramount could accommodate as many as 150 to 200 slots, said the mayor.
The proposal could be funded by the $10 million granted to Middletown from the state for the purpose of downtown redevelopment.
