NEW WINDSOR – The number of passengers to use Stewart Airport in the first nine months of the year lagged behind previous years, but the volume of cargo moving through the Newburgh area facility continued to climb steadily. Members of the Stewart Airport Commission were briefed on the statistics at their Tuesday meeting.
During the third three quarters of the year, 205,979 people flew at Stewart compared with 214,887 this time last year. The most recent high number of passengers was in 2014 when 235,287 flew at Stewart in the first nine months of the year.
Airport officials expect traffic to increase with the holiday season fast approaching.
Cargo tonnage rose dramatically in the first nine months of 2016 with 15,806 tons passing through. Last year at the same time, 13,838 tons were processed.
Airport Business Development Director Michael Torelli speculated that with holiday shipping expected to pick up, the Stewart tonnage will increase even further.
“If you look at the numbers in trending it looks like we are going to be beating the last four or five years’ numbers and may even be on pace to surpass the 20,000 ton mark, which is a goal of ours,” Torelli said.
Stewart’s cargo numbers will skyrocket beginning next year when DHL returns with its cargo operations.
