NEW CITY – The Town of Clarkstown and Orange and Rockland Utilities Friday completed the town’s acquisition of close to 4,000 overhead streetlights from the utility company. The town paid $658,585 for the 3,912 units.
The sale does not include the utility poles on which the lights are installed or another 1,570 streetlights in Clarkstown that are energized by O&R’s underground distribution system.
The sale, which becomes effective today, will transfer sole responsibility to the town for the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, replacement, removal, modification, inspection and condition of all the streetlights covered by the agreement.
Clarkstown is the most heavily populated town in Rockland County and the first in O&R’s service territory to purchase its streetlights. The sale had been approved by the state Public Service Commission.
