ELLENVILLE – Opioid abusers, who come before Ellenville Village Court, now have an option to the potential of doing jail time.
Judge Matthew Parker has partnered with the Institute for Family Health for him to refer those who appear before his court to be treated within a day or two for opioid addiction.
“It will allow me to have better insight to help these people, get them into a program, be it in-patient or out-patient so that we can turn these people in the right direction as opposed to just punishing them by sending them to jail or fining them or something like that,” Parker said.
The Institute for Family Health, headquartered in New York City, operates a facility at Ellenville Regional Hospital.
The medication assisted treatment program offered is an evidence-based treatment for addiction to either heroin or prescription painkillers – opioids, and is recommended by the federal Office of National Drug Control Policy.
