Depew: “The problem is the drought”

TOWN OF WALLKILL – Voluntary water conservation has been put in place by Wallkill town officials as water levels in town and private wells remain at low levels because of the ongoing drought.
While the town may be in relatively good shape, because of the prolonged lack of rain, misuse of water could make things worse, Town Supervisor Daniel Depew warned on Friday.
“This is not an infrastructure issue; this is not a planning issue,” Depew said. “Remember, the Town of Wallkill has the permitted yield of 5.8 million gallons of water and our usage is right around three million. I would think have two times what you need is pretty good. The problem is the drought. The drought has reached a severe nature.”
The voluntary conservation effort includes, among other things, turn off your faucet when brushing your teeth, washing your face or shaving; fix leaking faucets; take shorter showers; don’t water your lawn and run dishwashers and clothes washers with full loads. Those recommendations apply to people on the town’s water system or a private well.
