Hundreds of law enforcement officers gathered to pay respects to Stuewer

POUGHKEEPSIE – Paul Stuewer was a career state trooper, working
for many years in his hometown Dutchess County Troop K.  He contracted
the cancer that would ultimately claim his life when assigned to the World
Trade Center site right after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
He died last week on October 5. He was eulogized on this Wednesday in a mass attended by close to 1,000 police officers. Troop K Commander Major Robert Nuzzo said Stuewer was a well-respected and beloved trooper.
“Law enforcement officers came from across the state and the country and paid respects to a true American trooper, who did his job and paid the ultimate price for his services as a result of his time down at Ground Zero after September 11th,” Nuzzo said.
State Police Superintendent George Beach, himself a Hudson Valley resident, said the world “is a lesser place without [Stuewer].” He faced death “the same way he faced life, strong, with dignity, bravely and steadfast,” Beach said.
The superintendent’s final message was “Shield 3 4 1 6. Thank you for a job well done. May God bless you, and may you rest in peace.”
