POUGHKEEPSIE – The Poughkeepsie City sanitation department is expected to become more efficient as the operations are tracked with an application designed by computer science students at The Benjamin Center from SUNY New Paltz.
The app automatically tracks and maps time and the location of sanitation vehicles, and by the use of Android phones provided to personnel on each vehicle, allows for the manual entry of the tonnage of solid waste dropped off at the Resource Recovery Agency.
Commissioner of public works, Chris Gent, will be able to add staffing information and the tipping fee for that day.
A dashboard will allow analysis to see how much refuse is collected, from where and when, and generate performance metrics as the operating cost for each run and the tonnage per hour of operation.  The data collected will be used to establish baselines and following stages will focus on adjustment of service delivery patterns to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
