Winters

GLASCO – Funeral services were held Thursday for Kerry Winters,
Sr., a sergeant in the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, who died
during a diving exercise in the Ashokan Reservoir on September 22.
His cause of death has not yet been determined. He was 51.
The veteran of 30 years in the sheriff’s office was remembered as a hero by one of his colleagues, Deputy Dirk Budd.
“During Hurricane Irene, the western part of the county at Shandaken, Olive, those areas, there was a tremendous amount of flooding. Sgt. Winters was an integral part of the in-water rescue team, very experienced with swift water rescue and diving and he was instrumental in saving a lot of people’s lives, who were trapped on the roofs of cars, trapped on roofs of homes, clinging to logs,” Budd said.
Following a Mass of Christian Burial, Winters was laid to rest in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery in Barclay Heights.

Over 40 fire departments and law enforcement agencies were represented at the funeral
