Funeral services for fallen Ulster sheriff’s officer to be held this week

Sgt. Kerry Winters

SAUGERTIES – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning for Ulster County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kerry Winters, Sr. An experienced diver, he died on Thursday, September 22 following a diving exercise at the Ashokan Reservoir. He was 51.
The service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s RC Church in Glasco with interment to follow at St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery in Barclay Heights.  Friends may call on Tuesday, September 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Buono’s Funeral Service, 100 Main Street in Saugerties.  Emergency responders and friends may call on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lazy Swan Village, 1754 Old Kings Highway in Saugerties.
Winters was with the sheriff’s office since 1986 and worked in the Corrections Division and on the CERT and dive teams.
Winters’ cause of death has not been determined; however, it is thought he may have suffered a medical condition.
Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum remembered his long-time friend and colleague as a “team leader.”
