Allegro (file): “We learned a
valuable lesson …”

MONROE – John Allegro, an activist with the United Monroe group, announced on Friday that he was pulling out of the race for the 98th State Assembly seat.
He would have run against incumbent Republican Karl Brabenec and Democrat Aron Wieder, the majority leader of the Rockland County Legislature. The 98th District includes portions of Orange and Rockland counties.
Allegro was running on the independent United Monroe line, but Brabenec captured that line. Allegro had challenged that in court and the incumbent agreed to run on an independent line without the United Monroe name.
“We learned a valuable lesson from the primary election,” Allegro said. “Voter apathy is an epidemic. United Monroe has been working on the antidote for that for the past four years but there is more work to do.”
Brabenec said Allegro “led a fierce and grassroots campaign” and he said Allegro’s decision” is paramount to uniting the Republican Party in this tumultuous political climate against our Democratic opponent.”
Brabenec extended an olive branch “to those who voted against me in the primary and would welcome their support during the remainder of my campaign and on Election Day.”
