POUGHKEEPSIE – A 16-year-old student at Poughkeepsie High School is under arrest for trying to sneak a gun into the building.
City Police said the youth, whose name they did not release, tried to enter the school at about 10 Wednesday morning through the main entrance setting off the metal detectors. He was stopped by school security and when another attempt to go through the metal detectors failed, he left that area of the school and went to a back door entrance.
That is where another school security officer saw him hide something under the door. That officer alerted the others who found a .22-caliber handgun wrapped in a hooded sweatshirt.
The youth later came to police headquarters with his father where he was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon.
This is the 33rd handgun recovered in Poughkeepsie this year.
Anyone with information about this or any other case or other illegal handguns in Poughkeepsie is asked to call the police at 845-451-7577.
