Middletown man arrested for fighting with sheriff’s deputies

TOWN OF WALLKILL – A Middletown man was arrested by Orange County Sheriff’s deputies after he fought with them as he attempted to avoid being arrested on drug possession charges.
Deputies stopped a car for an equipment violation on East Main Street in the Town of Wallkill. Erik Duggan, 35, a passenger, grabbed marijuana and narcotics that a deputy found in the vehicle and tried to flee. Deputies caught him in a nearby parking lot where Duggan then fought with them.
Duggan was arrested and charged with assault and tampering with evidence as felonies as well as misdemeanors of resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of governmental administration and unlawful possession of marijuana.  He was sent to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond.
The driver of the vehicle was issued a traffic ticket.
One of the deputies was treated and released at Orange Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained during Duggan’s arrest.
State and Wallkill Police assisted at the scene.
