WAPPINGER – The aviation
industry is short some 500 air traffic controllers and Congressman Sean
Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) announced on Monday  the president has
signed into law his bill that will allow for the hiring of additional
staff.  It is particularly beneficial to armed forces veterans and
raises the maximum hiring age from 31 to 35.
“Remember these are people who are very experienced,” said Maloney. “You can have a guy, who was landing planes on an aircraft carrier be told he isn’t qualified to work at the Dutchess County Airport. We thought that was crazy and we changed it.”
Maloney and Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro toured the air traffic control tower at Dutchess Airport on Monday before the congressman made the announcement.
Dutchess is a general aviation facility with recreational and corporate operations. It has no commercial passenger service.
