NEWBURGH – Some 1,000 students moved into Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh on Sunday to begin classes today.
Among those attending the four-year liberal arts school in this new academic
year are 400 freshman, 140 transfer students and the remaining more than
500 are returning students. Roughly 45 percent of the Class of 2020 will
be studying for careers in health professions, including nursing and pre-professional
programs. Close to 12 percent of the incoming freshmen will study
to become teachers while another 12 percent are majoring in business,
including accounting, business management and administration, finance,
marketing and sports management.
The Mount also offers courses of study in psychology, English, math,
sociology, history, biology, and chemistry.
Also launched this semester is a criminology major and has also received approval for a five-year Bachelor of Arts/Masters of Science Education degree in history and adolescent education, either with or without dual certification in special ed.
The new students are excited about entering college in Newburgh. “I like the people here. Everyone’s really friendly. It’s a great environment to be in.”
Davonte Woodton of Peekskill said he is ready for the challenges of his first classes. “I’m looking forward to a great new experience,” both academically and socially.
