POUGHKEEPSIE – A home improvement contractor has been ordered by a Dutchess County Supreme Court justice to pay $41,412 in restitution to four homeowners, who were victims of his home improvement fraud, $15,000 in penalties and $2,000 in costs to the state Attorney General’s Office.
Authorities said in many cases, consumers paid Daniel McInerney, doing
business as D Mac Design and Development LLC, thousands of dollars only
to have him disappear with their money without providing any of the contracted
services.
In one case, a homeowner paid him $9,000 in advance payments toward removal and replacement of a patio, work that was done improperly and resulted in damage to the siding on the house and central air conditioning system.
In another instance, a homeowner contracted with McInerney to renovate her bathroom. She paid $10,800 as the agreed upon price plus an additional $1,500 demanded by McInerney. When the project was one-quarter completed, he disappeared, leaving the job in disarray. The job ended up costing the homeowner nearly $30,000, after she spent an additional $19,000 to have the work done right
