POUGHKEEPSIE – A second man, who was struck by lightning while in Mansion Square Park in Poughkeepsie two weeks ago, has died.
Vassar Brothers Medical Center spokesman John Nelson said the 46-year-old man died Wednesday morning.
Another man, who was among the five either standing or sitting under a tree when the storm hit, died the day after the Friday, August 12 storm.
A third person who was brought to the hospital was treated and released. The other two people with the group when the lightning hit were treated at the scene by EMS workers.
Nelson had advice for anyone caught in a lightning situation.
“I am not a clinical person, but what all of our providers say is at the first sign of thunder, do everything you can to take shelter,” he said.  “Get inside and take shelter. A tree is not shelter.”
The five victims in this Poughkeepsie tragedy apparently stayed under a tree, which is one of the most dangerous places to be during a lightning storm.
