MONTICELLO – General contractor bids to build a new Sullivan County jail were opened on Wednesday and all came in well below the $95 million the county legislature authorized in bonding.  That amount, however, includes estimated interest on the bond which would be let in two installments.
The just over $65 million low bid, from a Pittsburg firm, likely won’t be the final cost.  That bid does not include the option of adding space for a sheriff’s office and road patrol, which would add about $8.4 million.
The second bid was just slightly higher than the low bid.  The other two bids were at $70.4 million and $71.6 million.
The bids will be reviewed and may be awarded at a special meeting early in September.
