Police officer, two civilians injured when Wallkill patrol car hits stopped vehicle

TOWN OF WALLKILL – A vehicle that was stopped on Route 17M waiting to turn left into a gas station, was struck from behind by an approaching Wallkill Town Police car injuring the officer and the driver of the other car, as well as a third motorist, whose vehicle was struck by the other civilian car.
Police Chief Robert Hertman said Officer Brendan Smith was traveling north on Route 17M at the intersection of Highland Avenue when he collided with a car driven by Rebecca Travis of Monticello. Her car then collided with a third vehicle traveling south on Route 17M.
Smith injured his head and was transported by ambulance to Orange Regional
Medical Center where he was treated and released. Travis was taken to
the hospital and was evaluated for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the third vehicle refused medical aid at the scene.
The Washington Heights Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
