YONKERS – City and village
mayors and town supervisors in Westchester launched the Hudson River Waterfront
Alliance in opposition to the proposal to develop commercial ship cargo
anchorages between Yonkers and Kingston.
Yonkers Mayor Michael Spano said the coalition is going to social media,
launching a website and consulting legal counsel to learn what its rights
are.  He doesn’t want to see the Hudson Riverfront, which has
been cleaned up over the years to the tune of hundreds of millions of
federal, state, local and developer dollars to take a giant step backwards
at a time when new residential units are being built.
“Millennials are coming here,” Spano said. “They want to be a part of a place that is cool. They want to be part of a place where they can play, and that means playing in the Hudson River, too and re-industrialization of the Hudson River is something that is not acceptable and we cannot stand by and let it happen.”
Public officials up and down the river have announced their opposition
to the proposed anchorages.
