NEWBURGH – No questions asked people may bring guns to the Newburgh Recreation Center in the city on Saturday, August 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
It is the third gun buyback program where people who bring in weapons will receive a gift card worth from $25 to $150, depending upon the firearm.
Police Chief Daniel Cameron expects guns to be turned in from a variety of people.
“A lot of them are guns people don’t want, and when they are guns that people don’t want, they are easily stolen, and in my career, I have seen that multiple times where guns, whether they be handguns or long-guns, wind up being used in crimes or found here in the City of Newburgh that were either stolen or lost,” Cameron said.
Guns brought in must be unloaded, and placed in a plastic bag, paper bag or box and brought to the rec center in the trunk of a car.
Any number of weapons may be turned in by one individual.
Licensed gun dealers, and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for this program.
