ALBANY – Columbia County had the lowest rate of unemployment in the state in June.  At 3.2 percent, the county’s joblessness dropped from the same month last year, which was at 3.9 percent.
Putnam County was ranked second lowest in the Hudson Valley with 3.7
percent while Rockland and Westchester came in third with 3.9 percent
each.
Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties each had unemployment rates of 4.0 percent. Sullivan County had a 4.2 percent rate and Greene County had a 4.3 percent rate of joblessness.
State labor department analyst John Nelson said the Sullivan rate, a drop of 1.1 percent over June 2015, is gaining some jobs with construction of the Montreign casino.
“I think they are benefiting from the overall strengthening of the whole regional economy, which is really good news,” Nelson said.  “I can’t rally overemphasize the fact that we have three sectors that tend to pay very good wages. You have the construction industry, the health care industry, and you have professional and business services.”
The June unemployment rate for the Hudson Valley was 4.0 percent, the lowest level since 2007.
