Miller – double duty

GOSHEN – Orange County Social Services Commissioner Darcie Miller,
who is also acting mental health commissioner, briefed county legislators
in committee Tuesday on why it would be the best way to conduct the business
of both agencies under one commissioner.
Legislator Michael Anagnostakis, chairman of the Mental Health Committee, noted if the county supports the dual role, other levels of government must sign off on it.
“It’s a test case. It hasn’t been done anywhere else so before we move to judge we have to hear if New York State says we can,” Anagnostakis said. “Then there will be more hearings, more discussion. If she (Miller) can run both departments as the leader and enhance how they provide services for the end recipient, I can’t see how that can be wrong.”
Miller was initially permanent mental health commissioner but took over the social services department when the head of that department resigned.
