Crew begins taking down one of the poles at an undisclosed location

TOWN OF WALLKILL – Removal of those so-called zombie utility poles
has begun in the Town of Wallkill. Those are poles that once carried cables
for telephone, cable TV or electricity, but have been replaced by adjacent
new ones. The problem is the old poles are partially cut down and left
in place.
Those used old poles are eyesores and the town has passed a law requiring them to be removed.
Town Supervisor Daniel Depew said the first 100 of some 700 of those zombie poles in the town are being removed.
“The private companies you are seeing around town this time taking
down poles are doing it on behalf of Frontier
Communications,” Depew said.  “There were almost
700 poles that were identified in the town. We had meetings with Frontier
and they identified over 100 priority poles that needed to be dealt with
first.”
The three companies that deal with utility poles in Wallkill, Frontier, Orange and Rockland and Time Warner Cable, use private contract companies to remove the old poles.
