HUDSON VALLEY – Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, was remembered at a private service in New York City on Sunday.  He died Saturday at age 87
Two local members of Congress are among many paying tribute.
“We mourn the loss of Elie Wiesel, who reminded us to never forget the horrors of the Holocaust or ability of the human spirit to prevail,” said Rep. Eliot Engle (D, 16)
Rep. Nita Lowey (D, 17) said “I join millions of mourners across the globe whose hearts ache after the passing of Elie Wiesel. He was the embodiment of perseverance in the darkest and most brutal chapter in human history. Despite unimaginable odds, Elie survived the Holocaust and devoted the rest of his life to ensuring the world would never forget its horrors. His writings, teachings, and advocacy for human rights will live on forever, but the world will be a lesser place without his decency and dignity.  I will forever consider myself privileged to have known Elie. His memory is a blessing to all.”
Wiesel, who survived the infamous Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps, was perhaps the most prolific of Holocaust survivors who wrote about his experiences.  He authored 57 books.
His 1986 Nobel Peace Prize recognized him as a “messenger to mankind.”
