GOSHEN – A Newburgh man was sentenced in Orange County Court to six years in State Prison, and three years of post-release supervision, for having possessed a loaded .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun on September 12, 2015 near the intersection of South Street and Chamber Street in the City of Newburgh.
Nigel Elmore, 21, pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree on April 11, 2016.
Elmore’s case was handled as part of the Gun Initiated Violence Elimination [GIVE] program. The Group Violence Intervention strategy is a national model utilized by many large cities across the country.
“This case demonstrates the effectiveness of the GIVE strategy as it is being implemented in the City of Newburgh,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.  “The City will be safer when this defendant is in state prison.  I applaud the work of the City of Newburgh Police in this case.  The success of the GIVE program lies not only in the great cooperation and support shown by law enforcement agencies, particularly the City of Newburgh Police Department, but also in the broad support of diverse community partners.”
