MIDDLETOWN – Middletown’s reservoir system is located to the west of the city where there is much interest in new development and as a means of protecting that resource going forward, the city will hire a consultant to develop a source water protection plan.
Problems in another Orange County city’s watershed are prime examples as to why Middletown should look for protect its water, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.
“The Newburgh example is a prime example of the watershed area not being protected where the pond at the airport is feeding into the reservoir, so we felt it was important, it hasn’t been updated in many, many years, to develop an updated watershed plan and see how we stand,” DeStefano said. “They will do an evaluation and make recommendations.”
Middletown will spend $107,400 for the study by the CDM Smith company.
State and federal officials, meanwhile, still have not definitively pinpointed the cause of chemical contamination of the City of Newburgh’s main water source, Washington Lake.
