ALBANY – The state legislature approved a measure on Thursday that will allow the City of Yonkers to repair and rebuild the school district’s 39 schools.
Assuming the governor approves the bill, Yonkers will receive some 70 percent reimbursement – on par with other cities including Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, which have similar school reconstructions. Mayor Michael Spano had sought 98 percent reimbursement.
“The reimbursements are still over a year away from being available, so it gives us another opportunity next year in Albany,” Spano said.
The legislation creates the Yonkers Joint Schools Construction Board, which can bond for the cost of construction.
