KIAMESHA LAKE – Environmental remediation will commence shortly on three sections of the Adelaar site at Concord Road in Kiamesha Lake, the future home of the Montreign casino and other major destination-resort and recreation facilities at the site of the former Concord Hotel.
The cleanup activities will be performed by the Brownfield Cleanup Program applicant, EPR Concord II, with oversight from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The remediation is divided into four areas of the property. One is the location of a gas station that operated from the 1950s through the 1990s. That property is contaminated with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. The petroleum contaminated soils will be removed to allow for unrestricted use of the property.
Section two of the property is a former golf maintenance building and the sources of contamination include aboveground and underground pesticide and herbicide storage, a disposal area, a septic field, and waste storage associated with vehicle maintenance. Contaminated soil will be removed from the site and a cover system will be installed.
Section three of the property is a former landfill area used to dispose of construction and demolition debris and general waste. Contamination includes PCBs, pesticides, and metals. Remediation will include removal of contaminated soils with an environmental easement to restrict development to commercial use and imposition of a groundwater use restriction.
The total property was part of the expansive Concord Resort complex that was built in stages over the past 80 years. Before that, the land was either used for farming or was forested.
