Newburgh man drowns while trying out as lifeguard

NEWBURGH – A 22-year-old Newburgh man, who was a 2012 graduate of
Monroe-Woodbury High School, drowned in Cape Code on Saturday.

Jack Jakubeck, who was called star swimmer, was trying out at Pilgrim
Lake for a summer lifeguard position, a job he held last summer.

During a tryout on Saturday morning, he disappeared in the lake about
200 feet from shore and was located a half hour later. He was pronounced
dead at a local hospital.

An investigation is being conducted into the death of a young man, who
was the captain of his men’s swim team while attending SUNY Cortland.
