ALBANY – The 2016 session of the state legislature is nearing its home stretch and despite talk of ethics reform, lawmakers including Republican Assemblyman Peter Lopez, do not see it coming anytime soon.
Lopez said Democrats, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, are afraid to tackle the issue given the fall of several government leaders.
“These folks are dodging incoming fire from (US Attorney) Preet Bharara who is on their tails and they feel the heat. You would think they would be the most cooperative, most happy, most congenial,” Lopez said. “They use these words ‘transparent, open government,’ along with these other worn out phrases; the rhetoric – it would be funny if it wasn’t funny.”
Lopez said the leaders are only sincere and transparent when they want to be.
