GOSHEN – A Harriman man, who tried to hold up a Quick Stop Deli
on River Road in the Village of Harriman on November 24, 2015 and then
shot a man in the back when he fled the store, was sentenced in Orange
County Court on Wednesday to 11 years in state prison and five years of
post-release supervision.
Matthew Bauman, 26, pled guilty in April to attempted armed robbery.
He admitted that during the evening of that November date, he had stolen
his father’s licensed handgun and went to the store with the intent
to rob it to feed his heroin addiction. Outside the store, he confronted
the victim and pulled his gun at which time the man ran and was shot in
the back of the shoulder.
“This is a classic example of someone in a drug fueled rage that has no ability to think, committing a crime, and then realizing afterward that they committed a very serious crime,” said District Attorney David Hoovler.
The DA said the stiff sentence might deter others who are tempted to commit violent acts to fuel their habits to think twice and will motivate others to get treatment they need before another tragedy happens.
