Maloney and Gerbeth

NEWBURGH –U.S. Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) presented an Army Commendation Medal for valor and heroism in combat to Hudson Valley Iraq war veteran Sergeant Richard Gerbeth, Jr. at a well-attended ceremony, Monday, on the grounds of Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site overlooking the Hudson River in Newburgh.
Maloney told Gerbeth that presenting medals is a welcome part of his job, but to do so today at Washington’s Headquarters where the Purple Heart was created, where General Washington worked and where he contemplated what they achieved during the Revolution and what was to come, was especially satisfying.
“We are continuing a tradition that is as old as the country, literally, from this very spot, to this very spot, across all those years,” said Maloney. “It’s that without brave men like you, willing to put everything on the line, there wouldn’t be a United States and we wouldn’t have any of the freedoms that we enjoy.”
While under enemy fire in Iraq, Sergeant Gerbeth rescued a patrol leader who was exposed to enemy fire. He remained with the patrol leader and maintained communications throughout the ordeal.   Acting as the ambush team radio operator, he engaged the enemy and coordinated the Quick Reaction Force response. Sergeant Gerbeth’s actions are recognized by the Army as reflecting great credit upon himself and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
Sergeant Gerbeth began his remarks by looking at the Gold Star Mother’s in attendance and said, “Every day is Memorial Day for them,” and how their children were the true heroes.
He went on to describe what took place during his time in Iraq, dedicating the award to the men who were with him that day saying that they are as deserving of it as he is. “I feel there should be more names on the back of this award, not just mine. They would have all done what I did.”
Army Major Ross Pixler said of Gerbeth that “there’s no finer gentleman more deserving of this recognition.” Pixler also said that he’s received and given out many military awards, but he has yet to see one with such a large crowd. He said this honors Sergeant Gerbeth and speaks volumes as to his character and how many lives he’s touched.
The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to service members who distinguish themselves through heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.
Gerbeth is currently serving as the National Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and is a member of Representative Maloney’s Veterans Advisory Board.
