KINGSTON – Members of the Ulster County Human Rights Commission did not attend Tuesday night’s Kingston Common Council Law and Rules Committee meeting, but they did fire off a letter to Mayor Steven Noble and council leadership expressing their concerns about the proposal.
Among the commission’s concerns is the potential negative impact on the neighborhood, which they point out is low income and predominantly minority. Member JoAnne Myers signed the letter for the commission.
“Actually the language that was used by some of those who support this range and how they were describing the Midtown residents so that we might need protection from the residents and that’s really not the purpose of a shooting range and gun shop; it’s not to protect individuals from their neighbors, per se,” Myers said.
The human rights commission also cited the close proximity to the YMCA and high school as being “extremely troubling on a number of levels.”
