WASHINGTON – SUNY Sullivan,
SUNY Rockland and Bard College are three post-secondary schools in the
region that have been granted federal Education Department approval to
offer college level courses to high school students funded through Pell
grants. They had only been approved for students who finished high school,
but now seniors may be eligible if they quality.
In Sullivan students in Fallsburg, Liberty and Monticello school districts may be able to participate in the three-year pilot program, but in that county only 59 students will be admitted, noted Dr. Stephen Mitchell, who coordinated and wrote the grand for SUNY Sullivan.
“The program is designed to reach out to low income and disadvantaged students who might not be able to afford going to college, and so looking at the demographics, those are three of the districts in Sullivan County that have the highest percentage of free and reduced lunches so we talked to those superintendents and they were all pretty excited about the opportunity,” Mitchell said.
