ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – Three colleges, Bard in Annandale-on-Hudson, the University of Buffalo and SUNY Broome Community College, each will receive $1 million in state funds in the state’s Energy to Lead Competition.”
The competition challenged student-led coalitions from New York colleges and universities to design and develop innovative plans for campus and community-wide clean energy projects.
The Bard project, “Microhydro for Macro Impact” will retrofit a former hydro dam on campus, said NYSERDA President John Rhodes.
“They are going to put in new microhydro technology to prove that this is a solution that can work and displace fossil fuel generation for electricity with this clean hydro power,” Rhodes said.
The total cost of the Bard project will be covered with the $1 million state grant.
The hydro facility is expected to provide 2 ½ percent of the campus’ energy use and save carbon emissions of 70 vehicles per year.
The winners were announced at Bard College on Monday by NYSERDA officials.
