GOSHEN – A City of Newburgh man is expected to receive a 10-year prison sentence plus post-release supervision when sentenced in Orange County Court in July on his guilty plea to rape in the first degree.
Gregory Jones, 50, admitted to attacking a woman, who was a complete stranger, on June 20, 2015.
The victim saw Jones on a Newburgh street and asked him if he had a light for her cigarette. He convinced her to enter a nearby apartment building where he could get her a light and once inside the vacant building, he dragged her into a room and forcibly raped her.
The woman managed to free herself and ran outside screaming for help. A neighbor saw her and called police, who investigated and identified Jones as the perpetrator.
“Sex offenses are among the worst acts that people can perpetrate against each other,” said District Attorney David Hoovler, “but a sex offender rises to an entirely different and more dangerous level when he forcibly rapes strangers that he encounters on the street.”
