NEW YORK – Metro-North Railroad will spend some $11 million to purchase a Track Geometry Vehicle to inspect its track infrastructure to alert the railroad of any track issues.
The MTA Board approved the expenditure at its April session. The railroad
announced on Thursday that it will enter into a contract with Enso Inc.
to design, build and deliver the vehicle, which will be placed into service
in early 2018.
“This vehicle will further enhance our efforts to identify any potential track problems so they can be repaired before becoming safety issues and affecting service,” said Metro-North President Joseph Giulietti.
The railroad has relied on third party contractors to operate their inspection vehicles on tracks during off hours and provide the railroad with data feedback.
Purchase of its own Track Geometry Vehicle will provide in-house capability so the railroad “can examine and make necessary repairs with greater speed and efficiency, resulting in cost savings,” said Glen Hayden, vice president – engineering for the railroad. “It will allow Metro-North to inspect track to meet federal requirements as well as to verify quality of tract production efforts.”
