HIGHLAND – For the 20th year in a row, the Mid-Hudson Bridge connecting Poughkeepsie and Highland is home to newly hatched Peregrine Falcons.
Two new hatchlings are being nurtured by mom and dad are seem to be doing
“quite well,” said New York State Bridge Authority Executive
Director Joseph Ruggiero. The Bridge Authority has posted video of the
nesting box on You Tube.
The Bridge Authority hosts nesting boxes on each of the five Hudson River vehicle bridges. The boxes were installed in the late 1980s as part of the effort to re-establish the Peregrine in the Hudson Valley.
The birds remain on the list of endangered species.
The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird on the planet. In a hunting dive, it will soar to heights of a half mile or more, then dive at speeds of over 200 miles an hour. The top speed recorded was 242.3 mph.
