MIDDLETOWN – Union employees working for the City of Middletown have a sick bank where they can donate some of their time to other union members who have emergency situations and are out of time. The city wanted to create a similar program for non-union employees. The common council approved it, but not before Alderman Joseph Masi said the city treasurer explained the plan to union leadership and they rejected it.
That floored Masi.
“I am just flabbergasted; totally amazed,” Masi said.  “This is a program that will benefit the union member along with some non-union members because they can do it amongst themselves. There is no downside; it’s nothing but a positive and yet this is the stance that they took.”
In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, the common council approved creation of the new sick time donation policy.
