CRAGSMOOR – By late Monday afternoon, the wildfire raging through
Sam’s Point Preserve has consumed some 800 acres near the Ice Caves.

The fire started on Saturday and local and state firefighters and other
first responders have been battling the flames during the daylight hours
since them.

More than 110 state emergency personnel are working with the locals to
contain the fire. Four local EMS agencies and 17 Ulster County fire departments
have been deployed as well.

Smoke could be seen rising about the Shawangunks from as far away as Middletown.

A number of smaller brush fires have been cropping up across the region
in recent days, but none of the magnitude of the Sam’s Point fire.
