NEW YORK – James Burpoe, Jr. of Orange County is a five-year member of the New York City Police Department.  On Wednesday, he was named “Cop of the Year” for the 30th Precinct in Harlem and that award came after he was selected three times as “Cop of the Month.”
Burpoe,, 28, holds the rank of investigator as he works his way to detective.
His “Cop of the Year” honor, based on a number of criteria, was presented by Police Commissioner William Bratton.
“They look at your standing in the community, ranked among your peers, your overall perception by the public and by people on the job and supervisors,” Burpoe said. “They looked at the type of arrests that were made, anything that was a major arrest, such as for a robbery or for illegal firearms or things of that nature.”
While Burpoe acknowledged the job is dangerous, he said he gives respect to the people with whom he deals and usually receives respect in return.
