Hein proposes increasing property tax exemptions for Ulster vets

KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein announced on Wednesday two proposed local laws to enhance the property tax exemptions currently granted to veterans in the county.
Based on new exemption levels recently adopted by the state, Hein’s proposals would ensure local vets have the most up-to-date exemptions under the law.
The proposal raises the ceiling for property tax exemptions for honorably discharges veterans and Cold War vets to $45,000, with an additional exemption of up to $30,000 for those veterans who served in a combat zone.  The law would also provide an additional exemption of up to $150,000 for those vets who have suffered a military service-related disability.
The last time Ulster updated it veterans’ property tax exemptions was in 2012.
Legislator Richard Gerentine, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said the tax exemption “is a small measure of our gratitude and there is no other group more deserving than the brave men and women who selflessly”
