NEWBURGH – The populations of three Mid-Hudson Valley counties are growing, according to the latest estimates from the US Census Bureau and that is a sign that the population of the New York metropolitan region is moving further north. That projection comes from Joe Czajka, senior vice president of policy and planning organization Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress.
Czajka noted that at the same time, the population in Putnam County has declined, and the reason for that is the high rate of real estate taxes.
He expects more growth to the north in the future.
“I think we may see some more out migration,” Czajka said.  “The migration we are seeing in is really from foreign born folks. The cities particularly are seeing an increase in the Hispanic and Latino populations. We can see that in the demographics of the past and I think we are going to start to see an even heavier trend in the coming future.”
Population growth from 2010 to 2015 shows Rockland County ranked fourth
in the state and ranked second in the state over the past year, 2014-2015.
Westchester County had a 2.9 percent growth while Orange County population rose by 1.3 percent from 2010 to 2015.
Czajka said all the other counties in the region showed declining populations with Sullivan showing the greatest drop with a loss of 3.4 percent of its population.
