GOSHEN – An Orange County Court jury Tuesday convicted a Port Jervis man of robbery for holding up a man who rented a room from his mother in a house in Port Jervis.
Shakeel Waller, 33, faces up to 15 years in state prison when sentenced next month.
Waller was accused of approaching the victim in a common area of the house and demanding money from him. When the man refused, Waller punched him in the face, knocking out one of his teeth, and stole $200.
“Those who use violence to steal, even if they do not use a weapon, deserve lengthy prison sentences,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “The evidence supports the jury’s determination that this defendant needlessly punched his much smaller victim in the face in order to steal his money. This crime is even more heinous since it occurred where the victim lived.”
Hoovler said everyone deserves to feel safe in their home.
