MONTICELLO – More and more residents are apparently receiving phone calls from people purporting to be from the IRS and harassing them to make a payment on a non-existent tax bill.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received six calls from local residents on Monday alone to report they had received those types of phone calls.
“The IRS will never threaten to send the police to your house to collect taxes,” said Sheriff Michael Schiff. “They will certainly not require you to use a specific payment method like a pre-paid debit card either.”
The sheriff said if you get a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, do not give out any information and hang up immediately.
Persons with questions about their taxes may call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
