MONTICELLO – By a one vote margin, Cora Edwards was approved Friday
by the Sullivan County Legislature to be the next Democratic elections
commissioner.

The party chose Edwards for the post and it is standard procedure for
the legislature to rubberstamp that confirmation.

Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez was concerned that since she had just
completed a term as a county legislator, she should not be permitted to
hold a county position, but when push came to shove and the vote was four-four,
he cast the tie-breaker and voted to name her to the post.

Alvarez made the decision because he noted that is what the party wanted,
but he plans to explore a county ethics law or resolution that would disallow
anyone who served as a county legislator to hold an appointed county job
for one year.
