Regional unemployment continues downward spiral

ALBANY – Unemployment in the Hudson Valley fell again for the 12-month
period ending in January.

Columbia and Putnam counties each ranked third lowest in the state at
4.3 percent. Columbia County dropped 0.8 percent while Putnam fell by
0.7 percent from the same period last year.

Rockland County ranked fourth lowest in the state at 4.4 percent while
Orange and Westchester counties each came in eighth at 4.5 percent.
Dutchess County, at 10th place, had a rate of 4.6 percent.

Ulster County, at 4.9 percent joblessness, was ranked 13th in the state.

Greene and Sullivan counties each had 5.8 percent unemployment, both ranked
25th statewide. Sullivan and Greene had the largest declines in the region
at 1.2 percent.

Ulster and Orange counties each dropped joblessness by one percent.

Regionwide, employment was 4.6 percent, the lowest January level since
2007. One year earlier, in 2015, the rate was 5.4 percent.
