already in use elsewhere on the Thruway, works

TARRYTOWN – Cashless, or all-electric toll collection, begins on the Tappan Zee Bridge this spring, allowing drivers to pay their tolls at highway speeds without slowing down or stopping. If they don’t have E-ZPass, motorists will receive bills in the mail. Drivers who do not have E-ZPass now are urged to sign up for it.
The new system was designed in conjunction with construction of the new bridge.
Tolls will be temporarily collected near exit 10 on the southbound Thruway in South Nyack using an overhead steel structure, high-tech cameras, sensors and other equipment, which is in final stages of testing.
Once the new system is functional, the toll plazas in Tarrytown will be removed. Cashless tolls will relocate to the Westchester side of the bridge once the new structures have been completed
