BUCHANAN – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted Entergy, the owner/operator of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan permission to extend the frequency of the containment integrated leak rate test from once every 10 years to once every 15 years on a permanent basis.
The approval was granted following a request from Entergy. The NRC found
that the facility will operate in conformity with the application and
rules and regulations of the commission and that there is “reasonable
assurance that the activities authorized by this amendment can be conducted
without endangering the health and safety of the public and will not be
harmful to the common defense and security.
The approval does not sit well with Rep. Nita Lowey (D, NY17) who said the NRC “should not ease any type of testing requirement at Indian Point” as she pointed to the recent leaks at three wells that included radioactive tritium earlier this month.
